Community Service - Outreach At St. John’s

St. John’s is a small, growing and energetic Parish whose parishioners are actively involved in Community Service. We host and sponsor many functions during the year in support of the Community and are engaged in a variety of functions that both serve and support the local community.

Warm Nights
Annually we are invited to participate in the Warm Night Program at St. Barnabas, Temple Hills. On our night, we provide a wonderful, healthy meal to the homeless being sheltered there. In recent years we have been "lucky enough" to have it snow significantly when we were scheduled to provide the meal. Thanks to the many volunteers who serve and/or provide food for our guests. This effort is funded through the "Christmas at the Creek" concert series.

Host Site for 12-Step Programs.  Currently we are hosts to the AA meetings which are held in the Church Hall on Saturday evenings at 7 pm.

Ft. Washington Food Pantry.  Every Saturday, we feed an ever increasing number of hungry families with bags of canned goods together with bread, frozen meat, and fresh fruits and vegetables during the growing season. We have been heavily involved with other community organizations, churches and schools who contribute canned goods and funds.

The Food Pantry is sponsored by St. John’s- Broad Creek, Grace Lutheran Church and Ft. Washington Christian Church. We owe our existence to their support in so many ways. Members of these churches figure prominently on our Board and staff our volunteer positions.   God has blessed us in this endeavor.

Community Concert Series.  Our goal is to share God’s gift of music with the community…After having begun the Community Concert Series with a beautiful Mozart concert in November of 2002, the series continued in 2003 with three concerts. In March we heard Carmina and the Chesapeake Viol Consort and in August we had a Picnic with Al and Amy who drove up from the mountains of North Carolina to play and sing some folk music for us. In November, the Howard Burns Quartet entertained us with some incredible jazz followed by a marvelous reception.

In February 2004 we were treated to a baroque concert by Ensemble Gaudior entitled Concerto d'Amore. In June we had another jazz concert performed by Rick Whitehead & Steve Wolf. Carmina returned in November with a performance of English Madrigals.

In March 2005, the female contemporary-folk duo of Lynn Hollyfield & Nina Spruill will be performing.

In October of 2006, Carmina returned and performed works by Tallis, Byrd, White, Sheppard and other English composers.

As you can see, all of the concerts are “top-shelf” quality and cover a wide variety of the music spectrum. Sunday afternoon concerts are often followed by a trip around the corner for dinner at the Bangkok Golden.

On March 18th, 2007, Jo and Wayne Morrison will be treating us with Voice, Harp and Pipe in celebration of St. Patrick's Day.

Though partially funded by the general budget, private donations of $100 or more have been received from those wishing to underwrite the series. Additionally, Free-will offerings were taken at the concerts in order to sustain the series. All contributions are voluntary and completely tax deductible.

 Christmas at the Creek
"Christmas at the Creek" concert is held in December. This successful series of Celtic Christmas music has provided funding to the Fort Washington Food Pantry and the Warm Night Shelter Program for 14 years.
