MUSIC PROGRAM
The Rev. Marc L. Britt, Rector
                     Kathy Doyle, Music Director

The music program at St. John’s includes diverse musical offerings and hymns at services, and the hosting and or support of community concerts and musical groups. Liturgically, the music at services complements the readings of the day, as a way of interpreting, commenting on, and praying them. At St. John’s we use the varied musical forms of the Hymnal 1982, Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS), the African-American hymnal, as well as the hymnal supplement, Wonder, Love, and Praise (WL&P). This variety is intended to extend St. John’s musical horizons, appreciation, experience, and taste in a way that reflects the multicultural reality of the world we all inhabit.

The Choir

The Choir sings at each 10:30am Sunday service from the Sunday after Labor Day in September through Trinity Sunday, in June. Rehearsals are held in the church from 7:30pm to 9:00pm on Thursdays. All are welcome. Currently there is a real need for Altos, but singers in all parts are always in demand.

In the past thirty years, the distinguished choir has presented such major choral works as:Stainer’s “Crucifixion”, Vivaldi’s “Gloria”, Faure’s “Requiem”, Schubert’s “Mass in C”, Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols”, Mozart’s “Mass in G”, and Rutter’s“Gloria”.In 1985, the Friendly High School Concert Choir joined St. John’s to sing Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” in celebration of the 300th year of his birth.

Ft. Washington Community Chorus

The Fort Washington Community Chorus (FWCC) began as an outreach of the St. John's Choir in December 1993, when the choir presented its first community performance of Messiah at Harmony Hall Regional Center. In the summer of 1998, as the Messiah Chorus, the group began presenting patriotic concerts to coincide with Fourth of July celebrations. In July of 2000, the first of what is now the traditional concert at Fort Washington National Park was presented to an enthusiastic crowd of flag-waving community folks.

The FWCC currently is a diverse group of approximately 60 singers from the community and churches in Fort Washington and is open to anyone with a love of choral singing. Rehearsals take place at Bayne Hall, St. John's, beginning 6-8 weeks prior to the concert. Two concerts a year are presented, Messiah the first Sunday in December and the patriotic concert on the Saturday closest to the Fourth of July.

From its inception, the mission of the chorus has been to present musical offerings to the community free of charge, while requesting audience donations to the Fort Washington Food Pantry, housed at St John's. The FWCC has been fortunate to have received grants from the Prince George's Arts Council, the Maryland State Arts Council and the Ruth Gregory Soper Memorial Fund, as well as generous donations of time, talent and funding from St. John's and other sponsoring churches.
